I like the idea and in a way, that ongoing presence of something cosmic looming over the distance or being an end destination for the game is almost as much of a staple to the franchise as Chocobos, Moogles, the Summons or someone named Cid. Yeah, my speculation on the Red Dot is by no means a point of criticism or complaining. I remember it was going to be a thing in FFXV until they opted out of it (the Blood Moon likely appearing when the world was in eternal night). It's been, in concept, something that's been appearing from time to time since FFIV (Lunarian Moon was supposed to be reddish in hue) and it always had some sorta connection to either whatever threatened the world or danger (FFVIII, FFIX, FFXIV).

I'm personally a fan of the whole "Final Fantasy red moon" thing.

I'd hate it even more if they go, "Yeah, we feel it's best to do another ULTRA-linear hallway simulator!". I wouldn't like that, if this game pulls it off, to have whoever is in charge of the next installment say, "Meh, this game's going to take place in one small region of the world!". You can't go back from such a feat because it would feel like all that ground covered to get there would be for naught. It's accomplishing what, for the longest time, was said to be impossible or "too hard". I remember it was going to be a thing in FFXV until they opted out of it (the Blood Moon likely appearing when the world was in eternal night).Īnd yeah, if they manage to make the world a collection of various sized zones, large cities, small hamlets, and such, it's very close to being the modern representation of classic RPG world map. Although I suppose there's the possibility that Bahamut's mirror Eikon of Holy or Light might be a Summon like Knights of the Round or something?Ĭlick to shrink.I'm personally a fan of the whole "Final Fantasy red moon" thing. I'm not too worried about missing out on Alexander, as he's such a great fit for this setting and the sheer scale of all of these Eikons. She's long overdue for another great appearance in a main game, and the whole set-up of Dominants and Eikons seem like a scenario that Anima would be well-suited for. It feels more in spirit with the format of the original "world map" and more detailed location zones from the older games than a straight-forward open world setting IMO.Īlso, as an aside, if we're all going by the theory of the eight Eikons all having a double of the same element (Phoenix and Ifrit for Fire, Titan and seemingly Golem for Earth), I really hope we end up seeing Anima as Odin's mirror for the Eikon of Dark. Bet that dot gets larger and larger as the years fly by in-game.Īs for the matter of juggling together dungeons, cities and towns goes, I do agree that there's a lot of potential for how the team's apparent approach for level designing and world exploration in the game via multiple large open zones could end up setting up a strong new standard for the franchise moving forward. It would tie back in to that tiny red dot by the moon in that one shot from the latest trailer with Jill and teen!Clive. Honestly, just having 4 or so towns the size of XV's towns but with actual content and story stuff would be great as far as I'm concerned. I'll try not to expect much in this sense, but the screenshots and the fact that they're so confident so as to share a map with unique icons (twice!) years before the game's launch bodes well enough for a return to form world exploration-wise. NPCs are suspiciously missing in all the screenshots (except for the Coeurl and the Dragoon), so I hope we see how lively the world is come autumn. That Dhalmekian one in the screenshots looks marvelous. The more grandiose, unique aesthetic and content is what the capital cities are hopefully for instead.

The side content could be more generic stuff (like monster hunting, perhaps shared across the hamlets in a given country) and, who knows, some more elaborate sidequest here and there. I guess a way to feature at least a bunch of these villages (others could be destroyed/inaccessible) is if they're resting spots whose main purpose is restocking, maybe having some contextual conversations and, perhaps, the ocassional story cutscene. Also, there's the content (unique dialogue and maybe some unique NPCs and quests/sidequests). However, it's still a lot, even if they were to "just" mostly rearrange shared assets. Curiously, Sanbreque's (whose colours are blue) has a preference for red rooftops, unlike Rosaria's (a nation represented by red) blue rooftops.
